What's in a typical serving

Cod fillet in a crisp beer batter, deep-fried and served with thick-cut chips, lemon and malt vinegar.

  • 180g Cod Fillet
  • 45g Flour, 70ml Beer (batter)
  • 300g Potatoes
  • Frying Oil (about 35g absorbed)
  • Lemon, Malt Vinegar

How to make it

  1. Cut 300 g potatoes into thick chips, rinse and dry them well. Fry in oil at 140°C for 6 to 8 minutes until soft but pale, then drain.
  2. Whisk 40 g flour with 70 ml cold beer and a pinch of salt into a smooth, thick batter.
  3. Pat the 180 g cod fillet dry, season it and dust it with the remaining 5 g flour, then dip it in the batter.
  4. Heat the oil to 180°C and fry the fish for 5 to 7 minutes until the batter is golden and the fish flakes easily in the centre.
  5. Fry the chips again at 180°C for 2 to 3 minutes until crisp and golden. Drain everything on kitchen paper.
  6. Season with salt and serve with lemon wedges and a splash of malt vinegar.

How to make it lighter

  1. Make oven chips instead: toss the potato wedges with 1 tsp oil and bake at 220°C for 30 to 35 minutes.
  2. Order a small portion of chips or share them, and add mushy peas or a side salad for volume.
  3. Peel off part of the batter, which holds most of the absorbed oil, or choose grilled fish when it is on the menu.

How we calculated these values

  • Calories and macros are Sporty catalog estimates for one typical serving, calculated from USDA FoodData Central values for the listed ingredient amounts.
  • The serving weight (470 g) is estimated from those ingredients; the per-100 g values and the portion calculator are worked out from it.
  • Walking times use the Compendium of Physical Activities: 3.5 MET for comfortable and 4.8 MET for brisk walking, for a 70 kg adult (kcal per minute = MET × 3.5 × kg ÷ 200).
  • Vitamins, minerals and allergens are estimated from the same ingredients with USDA FoodData Central values; % DV uses the US FDA daily values.
  • Diet labels come from the ingredients. Real values change with the recipe, the amount of oil and the portion, so treat every number as an estimate.
