What's in a typical serving

Chewy Korean rice cakes and fish cake simmered in a sweet and spicy gochujang sauce with cabbage, spring onion and a boiled egg.

  • 150g Rice Cakes (tteok)
  • 50g Fish Cake (eomuk)
  • 1 Boiled Egg
  • 20g Gochujang, 8g Sugar
  • Cabbage, Spring Onion

How to make it

  1. If the rice cakes are hard, soak 150 g of them in warm water for 10 minutes. Boil an egg for 9 minutes, then cool and peel it.
  2. Bring about 300 ml water or anchovy stock to a boil in a wide pan and stir in 20 g gochujang, 8 g sugar and a pinch of chili flakes.
  3. Add the rice cakes and sliced cabbage and simmer for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring often, until the cakes are soft and the sauce starts to thicken.
  4. Add 50 g sliced fish cake and the spring onion and cook for 2 to 3 minutes more until the sauce is glossy.
  5. Halve the egg, add it to the pan and serve hot.

How to make it lighter

  1. Use 100 g rice cakes and double the cabbage, or add mushrooms, to keep the volume with fewer calories.
  2. Add a second egg or extra fish cake for more protein, which makes the snack more filling.
  3. Reduce the sugar to a pinch; the gochujang already brings sweetness.
