  1. Yayla is the lightest Turkish soup at about 220 kcal; lentil is 250, ezogelin and chicken soup 260 kcal.
  2. Chicken soup leads Turkish soups with 22 g of protein; Thai tom yum has 24 g in 230 kcal.

How many calories are in Turkish soups?

Soup (çorba) is part of almost every Turkish meal: at breakfast in some regions, as a starter at lunch, and as the first thing on the table at iftar. The good news for anyone counting calories is that the classic Turkish soups are light. Every Turkish soup in our meal catalog is 260 kcal or less per serving. Here they are next to some international favourites from the same catalog:

Ramen (Japan)560 kcal30 g66 g18 g

All numbers are Sporty's per-serving estimates for a generous bowl. Real values depend on the recipe, the bowl size and especially the butter or oil on top.

Which Turkish soup is the lightest?

Yayla çorbası, at about 220 kcal. It is made with 150 g of yogurt, a little rice and an egg yolk, finished with a mint butter. Then come red lentil soup at 250 kcal and ezogelin and chicken soup at 260 kcal each. The gap between them is small; the topping can easily change the ranking. A teaspoon of melted butter with chilli flakes looks tiny, but fat has 9 kcal per gram.

Among international soups, gazpacho and tomato soup are lighter, but they also have the least protein. Ramen is in a different category altogether: at 560 kcal with noodles and pork, it is a full meal rather than a starter.

Which soup has the most protein?

Chicken soup leads the Turkish soups with 22 g of protein for 260 kcal, thanks to 100 g of chicken breast. Lentil soup follows with 13 g from 70 g of red lentils, and ezogelin with 11 g. Globally, Thai tom yum with shrimp edges ahead with 24 g in 230 kcal. If you want a soup to work as a light meal rather than a starter, chicken soup and tom yum are the most filling options by protein. Does starting a meal with soup help you eat less?

There is good evidence that it can. In a well-known Penn State study published in Appetite in 2007, 60 adults ate lunch in a laboratory once a week for five weeks. On some days they first had a bowl of low-calorie vegetable soup (about 130 to 170 kcal), and 15 minutes later they could eat as much of the main course as they wanted. When they started with soup, their total lunch intake, soup included, was 20% lower: about 134 kcal less than on the day without soup. Whether the soup was chunky, puréed or served as broth and vegetables separately made no significant difference.

Keep the limits in mind. It was a short laboratory study in normal-weight adults, it measured single meals, and the soup was a very low-energy vegetable soup. Lentil and ezogelin soups are more filling and more caloric than that, so the effect will not be identical. Still, a bowl of soup before the main course is a practical, low-effort habit worth trying.

How do you turn a soup into a full meal?

On its own, a bowl of soup is a starter. Combined with a protein dish or salad, it becomes a satisfying meal. Some combinations from the catalog:

CombinationCaloriesProtein
Chicken soup + cacık380 kcal29 g
Red lentil soup + shepherd's salad410 kcal16 g
Yayla çorbası + chicken shish600 kcal55 g
Ezogelin soup + chicken shish640 kcal57 g

The chicken shish pairings show how a light soup and a lean grill make a high-protein dinner under 650 kcal. For more ideas in this range, see what to eat with 500 calories left.

What about the salt in soup?

This is the part of soup that rarely gets counted. Soups are seasoned during cooking, often with stock cubes or salty pastes, and they usually come with bread. In Türkiye's SALTURK II study, which measured 24-hour urine in 657 adults in four large cities, average salt intake was 14.8 g a day. Bread supplied about 34% of the salt people recorded, salt added while cooking 30% and salt added at the table 11%. Türkiye has been working on this: in 2012 the recommended salt content of bread was cut from 1.75 g to 1.5 g per 100 g.

The World Health Organization recommends less than 5 g of salt a day for adults, about a teaspoon, and estimates that average adult intake worldwide is around 11 g. A few habits help:

  • Taste before you salt. Lemon juice, dried mint, cumin and pul biber give lentil soups plenty of flavour.
  • Use stock cubes sparingly or make broth from chicken or vegetables yourself.
  • Keep the salt shaker off the table and go easy on the bread basket.
  • Measure the butter topping. A teaspoon of mint or chilli butter gives the classic finish without doubling the fat.

Which soup should you choose?

Choose by what you need from the meal. For the fewest calories: yayla, tomato soup or gazpacho. For protein: chicken soup or tom yum. For fibre and plant protein: lentil soup or ezogelin. For a full meal on its own: ramen, or any Turkish soup with a protein side. Every option fits into a balanced day; for more light dishes, see the 15 lowest-calorie Turkish dishes. If you would rather not estimate the bowl yourself, Sporty can log it from a photo.
